NNECOS  QOPI® Projects

Establishing QOPI® Certification as the Standard of Care for Quality in Northern New England

While unsuccessful in our 2011 ASCO State Affiliate Grant bid, the team continues to collaborate, concentrating on improving scores on the 24 certification measures. With the support of the society and tireless volunteer dedication of members of the collaborative network, processes and procedures will be developed and shared to ensure that all practices meet the 17 ASCO/ONS Safe Administration of Chemotherapy Standards and mock surveys of the practices will be conducted.

The team will continue to work to recruit additional NNECOS practices into QOPI®, and the certification process through participation in the processes we have developed. Broader participation in QOPI® is one step in a process designed to firmly establish NNECOS as the leader in defining quality oncology in the region, thus reducing the tendency of health plan program to impose redundant programs and requirements upon the practices.

2010 Grant Awarded
Collab
orative Sharing of QOPI® Data to Develop a Set of Best Practices

Led by past president, Dr. Andrew Hertler, NNECOS's successful 2010 ASCO State Affiliate Grant involves the collaboration of six distinct community oncology practices from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont in a QOPI® for quality improvement project. Through the combination of results into a broader group report, and collaboration of partners in discussion of results, a set of best practices will be developed for each measure by examining the processes used by those who score well on that measure. These processes will be implemented by the individual practices and results compared again after the next QOPI® round with the expectation of improvement, in effect using QOPI® for quality improvement in addition to quality measurement.

With the completion of the second round of reporting in the fall of 2010, the team will meet again in January 2011 to discuss outcomes/improvements. Early results demonstrate an enrollment of six practices (35% or 6 of the 17 practices in the tri-state area with physician NNECOS members) in QOPI®, two of which are QOPI® certified.
